Stone Byres - Once renowned for its Castle ( removed in the 20th Century ) is a landscape of Orchards and Fruit Growing and mature woods falling to the river Clyde. Landscape depleted by the advent of cheap labour and fruit imports from abroad.
When finally no one would pick - this very productive part of the Clyde valley fell away from usefulness. We were asked in 2016 to uncover the site History, conjure a vision for it and design appropriate Buildings that would speed up local Economic recovery. First up was Brown Field Land Remediation and that required the input of Engineer Mike Dewar. Physical process began with removal of acres of glass house, which were recycled and partially reused by Ayr Agricultural college.
Working with the client toward a high level Business Plan we then proposed a seasonally adapted Apple Barn that would work symbiotically with renewed incentives to bring the orchards back in to production.
This requiring that Seasonally the Barn was developed in a way that allowed for the generation of income by acting as Wedding and Events Venue.
Other than that - Planning permission has been sought for the placement of Bespoke Cabins designed by the practice at the woodland edge.
Overall remediation of the site being key.
Matters of access drainage , construction materials, being generated for a soft interface with a landscape reconfiguring itself.
Simple forms that celebrate Carpentry traditions in the area , arrival and aspect - on contours falling to the upper reaches of the river Clyde, where water quality is critical in attempts to boost Salmon numbers and general Ecological health.
For a full Historical assessment of the site and wider area, drawn up in the feasibility process, please contact the practice. Every attempt was made to mess around with the great Time Continuum toward a happy healthy landscape.
