Outside the Box at Cove Park
A B C its as easy as 1 2 3
A familiar site in the transient landscapes surrounding the Naval Dockyards of LochLong. - Portacabins Containers and other movable cubic storage units.
Throughout the 20th century and the domination by American military not much else found prominence in this Landscape.
Conservation Park manager David Crosthwaite had procured various redundant cubes as the American Military had withdrawn from the Holy Loch and brought them to the park. They were on their last legs.
We were asked to consider how to use 8 foot x 20 foot containers to make 3 residential artists apartments. We had to secure Planning permission and make best use of the ex Nissan Hut sites available to save on Concrete. We negotiated the removal of existing cubes already on the park for new ones and overcame a "presumption against development" for " new houses in the open Countryside" that way.
We were asked to consider high stacking and irregular Geometry but pushed for a simple low cost no fuss solution - A south west facing terrace of 6 on an existing slab in relation to water.
This provide 3 new residential units.
We provided a reed bed Drainage system via sustainable drainage consultant Gordon Miller and selected local plants to digest any waste. We arranged for extension of a seasonal drainage bund into a year long skye pond.
We turfed the roofs for extra insulation.
Nothing more and nothing less than they had to be.
